Upper ocean currents have traditionally been measured by surface research vessels with instrumentation mounted in the hull, by bottom mounted instruments, by stationary moorings, buoys or by surface radars.
These methods are often either very expensive, labour intensive, and provide data in only one point and/or does not cover the range from surface to 50m down sufficiently. Aanderaa Data Instruments, Offshore Sensing, Akvaplan NIVA and the Meteorological Institute in Norway has, over the last three years, worked in a consortium to develop a better method for upper-ocean current measurements using the Sailbuoy.
The consortium were fully funded by the Regional Research Fund Vestland and from ConocoPhillips to develop the new solution, which was qualified in the autumn of 2021.
This presentation will look at the method and results of the project: “Sailbuoy Ocean Currents”.
